Ramadan, the Month of Giving

Ramadan is the best month of the year – there’s no question about that within the Muslim community – and that shows in their donating habits. It is safe to say that most Masjids receive the bulk of their annual donations in Ramadan. In fact, a number of Masjids in Canada reported receiving between 45% and 65% of their annual revenue during the month of Ramadan.

After all, the prophet Muhammad (SAAW) ‘was the most generous of all the people, and he used to become even more generous in Ramadan.’ Aside from emulating his example, Muslims become more generous in Ramadan to attain its multiple blessings. By virtue of fasting, their nafs is less prone to committing sin and more inclined to doing good.

As a matter of fact, Muslim organizations are very fortunate in that Ramadan exists over a whole month. You see, in the mainstream non-profit sector there are giving days here and there in the year, but nothing as long as Ramadan. Ramadan gives Muslim organizations 30 days to appeal to their target audiences for donations. That is unheard of in the non-profit sector! Hence, proper planning for this giving season should begin months in advance and every Muslim organization should make the most of it.
